Recycled Plastic Bench

Precious Plastic Maine | 2023

Did you know that most large recyclable plastic items can’t be recycled at industrial facilities? That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try to reuse this durable material before it ends up in a landfill! Working with local breweries and a community group in New Gloucester, ME I designed and made this bench out of recycled high density polyethylene. From processing 55 gallon plastic drums, to extruding the 2x4s, to cutting and assembling the final product, this project was a great exercise in persistence, trial and error, and embracing a resource too often discarded.

Precious Plastic is a global community dedicated to an alternative way of recycling plastic. Precious Plastic Maine is a pet project of mine that is a slow process, but a way that I scratch my Industrial Design itch.
